The Wolfville Golondrinas site consists of six fruit (mostly apple) orchards and a total of 190 boxes at least 25 meters apart, centered near 45o7’N, 64o20’W in the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia; this grid was initiated in 2000. The orchards are spread over about 14 km2, each a short drive from Acadia University. About 80 of the boxes have openings large enough to accommodate starlings, but so far none have nested in the boxes. On the other hand, house sparrows have not been so reluctant.

Dave Shutler, Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at Acadia University, and overlord of the Wolfville Site.

To the chagrin of Raleigh Robertson, Dave scrupulously avoided tree swallows and chose instead to do a PhD with Pat Weatherhead on red-winged blackbirds at the Queen’s Biological Station. Dave’s disdain was mollified when Bob Clark paid him to work on the species in Saskatoon, and he has not looked back. Now, Dave’s major research focus is on how parasites intervene in avian reproductive ecology.  In Saskatoon, he observed that tree swallow nests were full of fleas. Dave continues to collaborate with Bob on the Saskatoon data set. A secondary part of the experimental design at the Wolfville site is to assess impacts of pesticide use on reproductive ecology of tree swallows (additional images and info can be found at http://ace.acadiau.ca/~dshutler/PRes.htm).
