The Olema Marsh site is located within the Point Reyes National Seashore (PRNS) at the interface of a freshwater marsh and willow-alder riparian corridor. This site is operated collaboratively by Tom Gardali of
PRBO
Conservation Science and Sarah Allen of PRNS. Thanks to the work of many volunteers – especially Eliot Howlett and Kenny Chandrasekera – the full 100 nest boxes were built to Golondrinas specs and deployed in summer 2005. Box monitoring in 2005 was minimal though at least three pairs of Tree Swallows used the new boxes. Tree and Violet-green swallows nest in the area and we suspect that both will eventually use the Olema Marsh site.

Tom is a biologist with
PRBO
Conservation Science (formerly the Point Reyes Bird Observatory) where he oversees the Terrestrial Ecology Division’s coastal projects including the long-term monitoring at the
Palo
marin Field Station. Tom’s research is focused on understanding avian population dynamics on the scale of decades or greater; e.g., climate patterns, habitat succession. |
