The Lee Vining seed site is located in Lee Vining Canyon, along the highway leading to Tioga Pass and Yosemite National Park. At over 2000 meters elevation, this is the highest altitude site currently in the Golondrinas network, and for this reason will offer particularly interesting comparisons to other sites. In addition, both the Tree Swallow and the Violet-green Swallow nest in adjacent boxes at the site.

The Lee Vining site got underway in 2001, through the efforts of Joel Ellis, a wildlife biologist and longtime resident of the Mono Basin. Joel, with some help from the local high school shop class, constructed and erected 50 boxes in the beautiful meadow shown at left. Only a few boxes were active in the 2001 season, but we are expecting rapid growth now that the boxes are in place for prospecting juveniles.

Sacha’s involvement with the Lee Vining site stems from her interest in bird and habitat conservation and research, and her passion for the Eastern Sierra. As a biologist with the Point Reyes Bird Observatory, she directs the Eastern Sierra Riparian Songbird Conservation Project, a collaborative effort among state and federal land management agencies, non-profit groups and other research projects, including Golondrinas de Las Americas.
