Golondrinas Database - Chicks

This data set is designed primarily for nests where detailed observations are made on the fate of individual nestlings. In general, each nestling will be individually identified.

For a general explanation of default variable codes, click here.

Variable Name

Description, definitions, values and examples

SITEID
[txt]
Research site identifier (e.g. ‘hillbank’)
BOXID
[txt]
Box identifier - unique within each site
ATTEMPT
[int]
Nesting attempt for this box, this year
CHICKID
[txt]

Unique identifier for chicks in same nest

Normally this value would be the band number. Dummy values are generated initially for any nestlings on which data are gathered before banding age, and these become permanent if the chick dies before banding. Unique but arbitrary band numbers are assigned using the following convention of concatenating several other fields:

{siteID}+{boxID}+{4-digit year}+{attempt}+'.'+01 (or 02, 03, etc).

In such cases, this value must agree with variable ‘BIRDID’ in the MORPHOLOGY database.

HATCHDAT
[date]
Date this chick hatches (mm/dd/yyyy)
HATCHACC
[int]
Number of days between visits bracketing HATCHDAT
FATE
[txt]

Fate of the chick

  • FL= fledge
  • P= preyed upon
  • X= human caused
  • S= starvation. Evidence of gradual deterioration in this or other chicks in the brood should be observed (e.g. small size relative to brood mates). Also, the carcass should be in the nest.
  • U= cause unknown (e.g. chick dead in nest, but no previous or subsequent evidence of food stress)
FATEDAT
[date]
Date of this chick’s fledging or loss (mm/dd/yyyy)
FATEDACC
[int]
Number of days between visits bracketing FATEDATE
OBSERVER
[txt]
Initials of field research person responsible for this measurement
